When It Makes Sense to Get Dental Implants [Cosmetic Dentist]

If you are considering dental implants, you might be wondering when it would make sense for you to get them. In dental implant surgery, a cosmetic dentist will surgically place the implant in your jawbone to act at the root of the tooth or teeth. One or more artificial teeth will be placed over this implant in your jaw. There are several reasons you might consider getting dental implants to improve the appearance of your smile.

Having one or more missing teeth

A dental implant can replace one or more missing teeth. There are different types of dental implants, so depending on the patient, an implant might support one teeth or multiple teeth. For example, if a patient has two missing teeth next to each other, the cosmetic dentist might place a bridge of artificial teeth over the implant. On the other hand, if a patient has two missing teeth in different locations in the mouth, the patient will need two implants.

Having enough bone mass in the jaw

Because of the force of chewing, the jaw must be strong enough to support the new teeth. One reason that patients may not have enough bone mass is because of missing teeth for a long period of time. When the root of a tooth is gone, it no longer stimulates the jawbone. This leads to some of the bone being reabsorbed into the bloodstream.

However, patients who do not have enough bone mass can choose to have bone grafts. In this procedure, the dentist will take bone from another location on the patient’s body and surgically place it over the jaw. Over the next several months, the tissue will fuse with the existing tissue in the patient’s mouth. This results in a stronger jaw.

Willing to commit to the process

Most types of dental implants are not done in one day. There are some exceptions for some brands of implants, but in most cases, getting dental implants is an extended process. After the dentist places the screw in the jawbone, the patient must wait until the site heals and the bone grows around the implant. This will help the implant to be strong. After this area has healed, the patient may need a second more minor surgery to place the artificial tooth over the screw. This may be the case if the gum tissue has healed over the screw.

Visit a cosmetic dentist near you today for dental implants

Getting dental implants may make sense for you if you have missing teeth and do not want a bridge or denture. If you have enough bone mass in your jaw, you can get dental implants. The good news is that even if you do not have enough bone mass, a cosmetic dentist near you can do bone grafts to help build up the jaw structure. If you are willing to commit to a process of several months to get your implants, then dental implants may be for you.
