Importance of Toothpaste Abrasivity

Wondering what is meant by toothpaste abrasivity? The abrasives included in any tube of toothpaste can range from very minimal to being very abrasive. The reason why most people are looking for a toothpaste that includes abrasives is twofold. The first reason is because toothpaste abrasives can help to remove any stains on the teeth, with minimal stains having the most success of being removed. The second reason is to help remove any discoloration existing on the teeth, which makes for a brighter smile. While these are both positive reasons for using an abrasive toothpaste, it is when there is too much abrasivity in a toothpaste that it becomes a problem.

Choosing a quality toothpaste

It really is essential for people to choose a quality toothpaste when brushing their teeth. So how does one go about choosing a toothpaste that will work ideally for them when there are so many different choices available nowadays? They should look for the ADA approval seal. The American Dental Association seal is one that everyone can trust, as they perform numerous laboratory studies on different types of toothpaste in order to check for their safety and efficacy.

Is toothpaste abrasivity important?

Yes, the abrasivity of toothpaste is very important. If there is too much abrasivity in a toothpaste, it can potentially cause excess wear on the teeth. Other things to consider when using in abrasive toothpaste are how much of the toothpaste is being used as well as how much force the brusher is using when brushing the teeth. A few of the more common types of abrasives used in a toothpaste include calcium carbonate, dehydrated silica gels, phosphate salts, magnesium carbonate and hydrated aluminum oxides.

People use a toothpaste that includes abrasives with a goal of removing any stains or discolorations existing on the teeth. When a toothpaste is chosen that includes a high amount of abrasivity it is possible to actually damage the teeth, which needs to be avoided at all costs. Overuse of an abrasive toothpaste can potentially damage the enamel on the teeth, which will not only cause the teeth to eventually yellow, but it will also put the teeth in jeopardy because they are no longer fully protected.
