Do I Have Options for Dentures?

Dentures, otherwise known as false teeth, are an important solution for patients missing multiple teeth. Fitting denture helps to restore teeth functions while improving health, confidence and quality of life. This article focuses on dentures as a dental restoration option.

What are dentures?

A denture is a prosthetic replacement for missing teeth and gum tissues in the oral cavity. Dentures are usually called false teeth because they offer a false-alternative for your teeth. They are available in different forms, including fixed, removable, full and partial.

Why are dentures recommended?

Although the primary use of dentures is teeth replacement, the reason usually differs. In some, it may be due to trauma or injury requiring the removal of the teeth and gum tissues. For others, tooth decay or severe gum disease may have caused teeth loss.

Aging is also a contributing factor. According to the Oral Health Foundation, by 2050, there will be about two billion people over the age of 60, which is twice the current figure. The older you get, the higher the chances that you would have lost all or almost all of your natural teeth.

Dentures are created personally for each patient to get back the look, feel and function of their mouth and teeth. Having dentures is much more than just having teeth. They help to preserve the normal structure of the cheeks and lips. They also help you eat properly and feel more confident.

Types of dentures

There are two primary denture options available: Complete dentures, which are the recommended option when every tooth in the mouth is missing, and partial dentures, which are used when there are still some teeth left in the mouth

In most cases, complete and partial dentures can be removable. The options for fixed partial dentures are available as a crown and bridge. And fixed complete dentures are also known as implant-supported dentures. Dentures can be attached to the upper or lower jaw or both, in some cases.

Complete dentures used to replace the full arch of the teeth and are designed to fit perfectly on the gums and jawbone. The procedure and period of placing the dentures typically depend on your situation. If the dentist removes your teeth before creating the dentures, then you will need to wait for some weeks or months for the bone to heal properly before the denture placement.

This means you will spend some time without teeth. However, in some cases, the dentist may decide to fit the dentures immediately after removing the teeth. The only issue with fitting dentures immediately is that the tooth removal process may alter the shape of the gums and jawbones.

The bones supporting the teeth usually need about six months to adjust accordingly after the dentist removes the teeth. This may mean going back to the dentist for adjustments or perhaps an entirely new set of dentures for a proper fit.

Final Note

Depending on the situation, you can choose to have your dentures fitted by a dentist or a clinical dental technician. Regardless of whom you choose, you need to maintain your regular dental appointments.
