Advantages of Getting Same Day CEREC Onlays Over Traditional Ones
If you have chipped or cracked teeth, you may have considered same day CEREC onlays so you can restore your smile. There are many advantages of this type of onlay over more traditional onlays. One of the main benefits is that you only need to go into the dentist’s office once to get your restoration. Read on to learn more about this type of cosmetic dental treatment.
What is CEREC?
Traditionally, a patient getting a dental onlay would need to come in for two or more appointments to get the onlay measured and fitted to their mouth. However, CEREC technology involves taking 3-D images of the patient’s mouth to create a computerized image. The system also uses a milling machine that works with the 3-D image to create a dental restoration in the cosmetic dentist’s office. This system removes the need for another lab. Patients can get dental onlays made on the same day.
Benefits of same day CEREC onlays
A CEREC same day onlay is used to improve a patient’s teeth and the overall appearance of the smile. There are many benefits of getting CEREC onlays, and these onlays are a good choice for busy patients. The benefits of these onlays include:
- Stronger tooth structure
- Comfortable fit
- Protecting the tooth from decay
- Repairing chips, cracks or decayed areas
- Appearing natural
This technology also does not require physical models of the patient’s mouth. This can improve the patient’s comfort during their visit because the patient will not need to bite down on gooey molds. The dental onlay will be designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding teeth.
Same day CEREC onlays vs. traditional onlays
Getting a same day CEREC onlay is also faster for patients. Traditionally, the dentist would need to send the mold of the patient’s mouth to the lab to create the onlay. This could take up to two to three weeks before the dentist got the onlay back and would be able to put it in the patient’s mouth. During this time, a patient might have to wear a temporary onlay.
This can be uncomfortable and restrict the patient’s eating habits to softer foods that were often less nutritious. The temporary onlay was also more likely to break, requiring yet another visit to the dentist’s office. And because the patient needed to wait to get the permanent onlay, there was also a higher risk of decay during this time. However, with the same day technology, a patient will not need to wear a temporary onlay.
