Q: What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening can be a highly effective way of lightening the natural color of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. It cannot always make a complete color change; but can significantly lighten the existing shade.

Q: How long will my teeth stay whiter?

The effects of whitening can last up to three years. However, this will vary from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth such as coffee.

Q: What are the side effects?

Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Others report discomfort in the gums, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing. If any of these side effects continue you should go to your dentist.

Q: What about home kits?

Home kits are cheaper. But because tooth whitening is a complicated procedure you should only have it done by a dentist, after a thorough examination and assessment of your teeth.

Over-the-counter kits sold in the US are typically not as effective because they usually contain only a small concentration of the whitening agents. Also, some of these products may contain mild acids and others are abrasive. This can cause ulcers and damage to the gums if the product is not used properly

Q: How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign uses 3-D computer imaging technology to depict the complete treatment plan from the initial position to the final desired position from which a series of custom-made, clear "aligners" are produced. Each "aligner" moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved.
